How to Create an RSS Feed For Your Blog

Lee Barratt asked:

Creating an RSS feed is one of the easiest and most popular things you can do for your Blog, to increase traffic and gain subscribers to the content and daily posts of your Blog. An RSS feed can increase your traffic and maybe earnings by double. Simple to create, easy to submit, feeds are one of the most powerful things you can do to make your blog or website more popular.

A few years ago, RSS feeds were only available for blogs. With the huge increase and demand for feeds, something had to be done. You can now create a feed for any website, simple and free. Dapper, is one website that will help you create a feed for your website, this can then be made into a widget and spread and be downloaded by anyone worldwide. Feedburner is probably one of worlds best known feed burning sites, now owned by Google. Feedburner is very easy to use and you also get the advantage of having some great free extras like Feedburner stats pro. This is where you have the opportunity to track your visitors movement in your feed, what they were looming at and what they found most popular or useful. This can be helpful where as you can build more posts about this subject as you know people are finding it useful.

When you have created your RSS feed, you need to submit it to the hungry RSS feed submission websites. Some of the most popular are, Millionrss and SubmitmyRSS, these are high up on the Google rankings. Another reason to submit your feed is that top search engines like Google and Yahoo will use your feed as a way of seeing when your site has been updated, this is called Pinging and many sites let you do this like Pingomatic. Pingomatic will tell lots of other search engines that your blog has been updated, this will help your search engines rankings, as the most active blogs climb higher and stay higher.

I’m sure you know that Google and Yahoo! rankings are one of the best ways of receiving targeted traffic. If your selling a product, targeted traffic is one of the most surefire ways of doing that.

Best WP Theme

Joshua Noerr asked:

I don’t usually write about blogging itself. I am a blogger, but the “blogging about blogging” space is very crowded. I do want to share with you what I feel is the best WP theme you can get.

It’s called Socrates, and I use it myself. Socrates is great for a lot of reasons, and based on your blogging goals, can help you reach them with minimal effort. Here is a short list of what makes Socrates so great.

1. No technical knowledge required

I am a writer. So all the programming and design that goes into blogging really doesn’t interest me all that much. Socrates makes it easy to get a site up, and start producing content right away.

2. If monetization is your goal, it couldn’t be easier

There is not a theme out there that makes AdSense easier to use. If you are a click bank affiliate, there is also a very simple process for getting that done as well. Plain and simple, if you want to make money with your blog, Socrates is the best WP theme you can get.

3. Unlimited customization

There is not a theme out there that you cannot customize, but unless you have a good knowledge of HTML, CSS, and or PHP, this is not possible. I prefer to spend my time producing content and interacting with my readers. With this theme I can do just that.

You have so many choices out there when deciding to get into blogging, that they can overwhelm and discourage you. You make it much easier on yourself by choosing the right theme. All of these reasons, and more, are why I think Socrates is the best WP theme money can buy.

WordPress and Trackbacks and Pingbacks

August 28, 2010 by wpautoblog

Donna Scheenloop asked:

Pingbacks and trackbacks are different communication technologies (XML-RPC and HTTP-Post, respectively). Pingbacks automatically find the links in a post and tries to pingback to those URLs. Trackbacks are done manually by entering the URL that it should be sent to. Pingbacks do not send content.

What are Pingbacks?

Pingbacks were developed to solve some problems that were found with trackbacks.

Blog pingbacks automatically notify your blog when other websites link to it. It’s detectable to the linking author and requires no user intervention to work. Here is a typical scenario of how it works:

John writes a post on his blog. Dan reads John’s post and decides to post his comment on his blog linking to John’s post. Dan does this in order to have more content on his blog. If both persons have the pingback enabled, Dan’s post will automatically send a pingback to John. John’s blog will receive the pingback, which will automatically go to Dan’s post to confirm the pingback originated there. This creates another link for Dan.

The pingback will display in John’s blog or comment section as a link to Dan’s post. Pingbacks allow editorial control over posts with each of the individual authors. This automatic verification process allows authenticity and makes it hard to fake a pingback. Trackbacks, on the other hand, can be edited by the recipient.

In order for this to work, John’s blog must allow pingback. Usually, most bloggers set the “Do Follow” to allow trackbacks and pingbacks. In order to ensure that the blog allows trackbacks and pingbacks, simply check out the blog comments section and see if there are any pingback and trackback links.

If you use Firefox, you can install the SEO for Firefox plug-in. This plug-in will let you know which links are “No Follow”. If the link doesn’t designate that it is a “No Follow”, then it is a “Do Follow”. Unfortunately, at this time, Internet Explorer doesn’t have this feature.

Is Your WordPress Blog Configured for Automatic Pinging?

WordPress has a built in feature that allows the webmaster to automatically ping RSS and blog feed directories every time the webmaster makes a post. Here is how you set this feature up:

Log in to your WordPress admin panel Scroll down and on the left side, click on settings, then on writing Scroll to the very bottom and make sure in the update services box, it has your pinging service website.

How To Enable Pinging URLs in WordPress

Log in to your WordPress admin panel Scroll down and on the left side, click on settings, then on discussion Ensure under the first section, default article settings, the first item “attempt to notify any weblogs linked to from this article (slows down posting) is checked.

What are Trackbacks?

Trackbacks were developed to provide notification between websites. It allows John to say to Dan, “Hey, I think you may be interested in this”. To notify Dan, John would send a trackback ping to Dan. Here is a typical scenario of how a trackback works:

John writes a post on his blog. Dan reads John’s post and wants to comment about the post. Dan decides to post his comment on his blog {Dan does this in order to have more content on his blog and to allow his readers to see his comment and make their comments on his blog} and sends a trackback to John’s blog. John’s blog will receive the trackback and display it as a comment to the original post. This comment links to Dan’s post.

This process introduces John and Dan’s readers to the conversation and the readers are sent to the other blog posts. John and his readers will only see a “teaser” of what Dan wrote within the comment section of John’s blog, which will encourage them to click over to Dan’s blog to read the rest. This trackback process was thought to be a level of legitimacy to the trackback comments because they originated from another weblog. However, John could edit the contents of the trackback on his blog only, which means the idea of “legitimacy” isn’t solved. Also, there is no actual verification process on the incoming trackbacks and they could be faked.

Other Important Factors:

You want to ensure that you are getting quality links to your blog. Therefore, always check the website content prior to allowing links. Ensure that you are writing quality content posts on your blog so other bloggers will want to link to your posts. Make sure you find quality content posts to link to. WordPress by default sets the “No Follow” trackback/pingback link. By default, WordPress pings every time you update/edit your blog post. If you want to avoid ping frenzy and to prevent getting banned for ping spamming, install a plug-in, such as MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer. Once it is installed, it will only ping when you add a new post. Trackbacks and pingbacks are an excellent way to build links and traffic to your blog. It also allows you to build relationships with other bloggers.

Feature Article Writing – Feature Article Writing Never Made So Easy Before

Sean R Mize asked:

Here in this article you will learn how to write a feature article so that the next time you write you will not only be more confident but also very successful in writing the same. The purpose of this article is to guide you to write feature articles in just three easy to apply steps. Here are 3 simple steps to make your task of writing feature article more easy.

Step 1 – First thing you need to do is select the topic of your interest and study it in deep.

Step 2 – Make sure that you add up all the points both related to controversy and also related to success in your title.

Step 3 – The last thing that you need to focus upon is do not bore your reader.

Here are step by step details that you can apply quickly and easily to get you started.

Step 1 – First thing you need to do is select the topic of your interest and study it in deep.

Here is where your interest plays some role. You can choose any publication of your interest. If you choose the topic of your interest you will definitely already have some knowledge related to it and also it will be easier for you to do some research on it. The next thing you need to focus upon is your headline.

Step 2 – Make sure that you add up all the points both related to controversy and also related to success in your title.

The title should be eyeball catching and this can be made easier by adding up controversy into it. Even if you add humor into it that will be good enough to trap their attention. The last thing that you should keep in mind is that the interest should be captured throughout.

Step 3 – The last thing that you need to focus upon is do not bore your reader.

You should not make your content too boring because the reader might close the article from middle and will not continue till end. So to keep up interest don’t make it too lengthy and boring. All the best for writing a wonderful feature article in future.

How to Make Your Own Blog With WordPress

August 28, 2010 by wpautoblog

Peter Burke asked:

If you want to learn how to make your own blog don’t be intimidated as it is now much easier than it has ever been. This doesn’t mean that it is really easy it just means you don’t have to be a ‘techie’ or a ‘geek’ to set one up and run it. In fact there is so much choice now with free blogging platforms it’s like there’s a new one coming up each day.

The most popular free blogging platforms to choose from are Blogger, WordPress.com and WordPress.org. I know I’ve mentioned WordPress twice it’s just that the dot com and the dot org are different because of what you are allowed to do with the blog under their terms and conditions so it was worth mentioning that.

In making your own blog you need to do a little planning first and selecting which platform is best for you – that’s why I mentioned the three types of blogs. If you want the simplest of blogs as for example a personal diary then opt for blogger or WordPress.com. If you want something for your business or your niche that you may want to monetize later then go for the WordPress.org.

Once you have chosen the type of blog there is one more thing you need to be made aware of. You don’t need a hosting account for Blogger or WordPress.com but you will need one for the dot org. To get a hosting account will probably cost anywhere from $3 to $7 per month so it’s a cost you may have to factor in.

Let’s assume that you want to start a blog for commercial purposes, you want it as an interactive tool for your customers but you don’t know how you are going to install it – don’t panic!

There is a very easy method that you can use if you have a hosting account with cPanel (control panel – it’s a brand name). Most hosting accounts will have on the cPanel a little icon called ‘Fantastico’. By doing a ‘Fantastico install’ your blog should be ready in 10 minutes!

You press on the icon and the cPanel will ‘walk you through’ a three part install. The one thing I would highly advise though is to make a note of the password and usernames that you create and put them in an excel spreadsheet or notebook so as you can log into the blog when it is created.

OK so now I’m assuming that you have successfully created your first WordPress blog and are very pleased with yourself the ‘hard work’ and ‘learning’ starts.

For any blog to be successful there are unfortunately things you must learn about like SEO (search engine optimization – at least the basics) and plugins – but at least you have started and you have been able to make your own blog that’s a great first step!

WordPress Themes – Getting the Best Values

August 28, 2010 by wpautoblog
Filed under Internet And Businesses Online

Arthur L Browning asked:

Webpage Templates are increasingly popular in several types of websites. The hottest area of the web, weblogging, gets thousands of new writers, visitors, and designers everyday. Many of these bloggers have joined with one of the dominant forces in weblogging – WordPress.

Why WordPress? It’s simple to use, yet has a good range of features, and it’s fully supported not only by wordpress.org but by a large segment of the blogging community as well.

Blogging is concerned with many points-of-view; some bloggers make very personal expressions, other bloggers are commercially motivated, while others have a technical or philosophical viewpoint to share. As blogging has increased, it is natural to see that the demand for more unique blog appearances has grown. And, because most bloggers have little if any experience in website design, the demand for variety in an affordable theme has skyrocketed. Many bloggers are content to add text to a standard skin that is shared by the majority of new bloggers and the less esthetically bent bloggers. But after a time even these bloggers usually look to make their blog a more attractive experience for visitors.

I have studied what has been made available in WordPress Templates – both free and for sale. After a lot of looking I decided to present the highlights of my findings – Free vs Sold WordPress Themes.

In the category of Free WordPress Themes my favorite list has 960 WordPress Templates and is found at Emily Robbins’ Blog. Emily has done a great job here. Her website has been around for a while so all of the 960 available themes are still being downloaded.

While I was searching for Free WordPress themes I found two other websites that offer some variety. WordPress itself offers many different blog templates at no charge at themes.wordpress.net. Good designs with an array of colors and features are available. “Green Earth” is my favorite, but they’ve had 352,130 downloads of their 638 various themes to date.

Another excellent website is AlexKing.org. This site published 135 free, new WordPress themes some time ago in a competition and they have proven to be very popular with numerous downloads for the blogging crowd. Prize winners are named in several categories, and all 135 blog templates may be downloaded there. My favorite in the competition is titled “Chocolate Candy”.

As for finding a unique, or more exclusive, WP theme you will have to hire a designer or buy a template for a one time download (or at least for a limited number of downloads). For commercial blogging, or for anyone who wants a distinctive look, an exclusive skin may be the best solution. New designers or experienced designers with budget or schedule constraints can get one of these templates and be operational in a hurry. Three WordPress template sellers that have validated templates at a good price are TemplateMonster.com, HyperTemplates.com and Perfectory.com.

Weblogging will continue to grow, and many of today’s bloggers will eventually move up to websites for ecommerce, or marketing of their own local, small business.

Steps on Creating a Successful Blog

August 28, 2010 by wpautoblog

Hemadri Sen asked:

Blogs are just a series of posts where the most recent entry is at the top of the page. Blogs are usually used for free writing to get your thoughts and knowledge out onto the internet. A blog cannot be used for eCommerce purposes – you can’t set up a shopping cart or send out newsletters; but you can use your blog to keep visitors up to date on any changes to your business’ website.

Before you start anything, you have to decide what your blog is going to be used for: marketing, a niche blog, or free writing? Once you have decided this, you need to choose a blogging platform. Blogger and WordPress are the two best ones available. Their blogs are easy to create and are normally optimized for search engines – so that your blog gets into the search engines.

If you are a beginner, Blogger is the easier platform of the two to use to create a blog.

Writing a blog is not difficult – once you have chosen your focus and niche. You just have to make sure that it is updated regularly. It needs to be focused and simple. Don’t make your posts too long, as your readers may not be inclined to read too much – especially when your blog is new.

Some good things to add to your site are “Likes” buttons for your readers to click when they like a certain post. Comments boxes are great too and will provide great feedback for you. Also add RSS as it will bring more traffic and gives you a good backlink. You can also incorporate Google Adsense to generate some income from your blog.

Keep in mind you won’t get thousands or even hundreds of visitors overnight. You have to be patient. Nurture the blog that you have created, and let it grow. A blog is like a savings account, the more you add to it, the more value it gets.

Best WP Theme – Socrates

August 27, 2010 by wpautoblog

Joshua Noerr asked:

In this article, I am going to tell you why I think Socrates is the best WP theme. I remember how it was when I wanted to get started blogging. I felt confident in my writing skills, but less so in my design skills. I wanted to produce content, but had no idea what my site was going to look like.

Luckily, I found the Socrates theme. It made life so much easier on me, and I don’t think I will use any other theme on any other projects. Here is a short list on what makes Socrates the best WP theme you can buy”

1. Buy Once, Use It On All Of Your Sites

I am in the process of launching two more projects. After purchasing Socrates, I will be able to use it on them, and any other sites in the future. On top of that, whenever Socrates is updated, you get those updates for free. You purchase once, and possibilities are endless.

2. Easy Monetization

Want to use AdSense? No problem. Joel Comm, one of the guys involved in Socrates, actually wrote a book on AdSense. He makes it very easy to place your ads, and he helps you put them in prime locations.

3. No Technical Skills Required

This theme is so great for a beginner because you can get your site launched, live, and producing content in less than 30 minutes. That is not an exaggeration! In fact, there is a video of Dan Nickerson, one of the developers, getting a site live in less than 10 minutes!

    Article Writing Made Easy

    August 27, 2010 by wpautoblog

    Darla Lacy asked:

What is a good way to get started in article writing? The best place to start is with a topic that interests you. If you choose a concept or subject that you are familiar with, words will flow from your fingers freely. This guarantees that you do not run out of things to say.

Once you have an idea what you want to write about, determine what type of information people would be looking for in regard to that topic. Now that you have a topic and question to answer you begin to write. Many people can start a line in their article in a matter of seconds. For others, getting the jump start is the problem.

A good way to get the first lines out is to imagine you are having an intelligent conversation with the reader. If you can visualize speaking to someone, it can help you to get the dialogue going. While writing, refrain from using regional terms or slang. This can be very confusing to someone who is not a native speaker or doesn’t understand the terms that are not from their home.

While piecing your thoughts together, it is best to use one main idea per paragraph. The rest of the paragraph will be supporting facts, or an expansion of the main idea. For example, if you have a very general main idea in the paragraph; you may need to expand on particular areas in order to get your points across.

Many people will write their pieces with three main facets. They will include an introduction, body, and closing in their articles. This is definitely acceptable writing but don’t feel that it has to be an art form. So long as your article doesn’t ramble on, you should be fine keeping the verbiage conversational. This helps the reader to identify with your thoughts and keep their attention throughout the piece.

With practice, writing articles will become second nature. If necessary, try some free writing to test your skills. This will allow you to go back and read your thoughts on paper. If you are having trouble understanding your piece, you can learn how to re-work your style in a fashion that will be “reader-friendly”.
