Blogging For Beginners – Creating a Popular Blog

October 18, 2010 by wpautoblog

Ronald Woodham asked:

Blogging has very quickly become an online activity that people all over the world are turning to for information, ideas or to promote an online business. Blogs have been popular for years, but are really “hot” right now. To borrow a term from the fashion industry, blogs can be considered “on-trend”!

Online blogs, or “weblogs”, were originally used as journals or online diaries by people just wishing to share their lives with friends, family, and other like-minded and interested readers. However, blogs have since taken on a more serious business dimension and are used by all successful internet marketers as an essential marketing tool.

Regular bloggers have become an influential online presence, as more and more people are turning to blogs, not just for information, but for recommendations and reviews.

It is not difficult to start a blog, but if you eventually want to make money from blogging, then you must make sure that the blog you set up has the potential to be popular. That will be the key to your success. To properly monetize your blog and make money from it, you will need a large and growing readership, and this should be your aim at all times.

So, how to make sure your blog will be popular? The first thing you must think about is your target audience, your readers. Who are you writing for? Do some research to make sure that your niche is not too vague, and has the potential to attract a large enough readership. Remember you do not have to be a professional or highly skilled writer to create a popular blog. Obviously, you are expected to obey common grammatical rules and be able to put readable sentences together, but you are not there to write the next War and Peace!

Blog readers are looking for interesting, informative or amusing topics to read, and quickly get bored with long paragraphs of dull writing. Popular blogs are never boring and manage to add something to reader’s lives and keep them entertained AND informed.

This is a sure way of developing a large base of loyal readers, who will stick with you, and provide valuable feedback through their comments and suggestions.

Whether you have set up a free blog on a blogging network like Blogger, or are having your blog independently hosted on something like WordPress, make sure it is well designed, and keep funky detail and colours to a minimum. Remember, the content of your blog is all important, and it must be clear and easy to read.

Driving traffic to your blog is exactly like driving traffic to a website and you can employ some of the same techniques. You can spend days setting up the most magnificent blog ever, but unless you get the word out about it, you will be the only one reading it!

Start with article marketing, one of the tried and tested ways of driving traffic to a website or blog. Don’t overlook social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook and YouTube as they provide valuable opportunities for adding links to your blog. There are also many social book marking sites like Digg and Faves, where you can promote your blog for free.

You should make every effort to get your blog indexed with the major search engines. If yours is a business blog and you want to properly monetize it, then having a good ranking with the search engines will be a major factor in your success. It will ensure a steady flow of visitors to read your articles and reviews, and to click on your affiliate links.

The higher your rank with the search engines, the more visitors you will receive, and the more popular your blog will become.

Rodney Ransom asked:

There are three ways for you to make money blogging. The first way you can make money blogging is by using Google AdSense. The 2nd way you can make money blogging is by adding affiliate links to your blog. And the 3rd way you can make money blogging is to sell advertising space.

For the sake of time, I am only going to go over one of these methods. So, this article I will just focus on how you can make money blogging with Google AdSense.

Make Money Blogging with Google AdSense

Have you ever heard of Google AdWords? If not, then I’m sure your probably aren’t familiar with AdSense.

Quick review…

Google AdWords is system were people pay Google to show their ads on the Google search engine. Some advertisers pay up to $10 per click.

Google AdSense is a system were Google pays you to place the Google AdWords ads on your website/blog.

Here’s an example. Lets say Jon Doe has an ad that’s tagged with the keyword “money”. And he pays $5 for the keyword “money”. His ad may show up on Google a thousands times, but he doesn’t have to pay unless some clicks on the ad. So every time someone clicks on his ad he pays $5. But if the ad was showing on a website or blog when someone clicked on it, then Google would basically take the $5 and give the owner of the website/blog a percentage of that $5. So Google doesn’t lose any money at all.

You’ve probably seen this before. If not just go do a search on Google for anything thing that comes to mind. Just about every website/blog owner has AdSense. I know a guy who brings in about $15,000 from AdSense alone.

It’s very easy to add Google AdSense to your website or blog, but it’s a little bit harder to get the traffic you will need to make good money blogging.

Those who make money blogging with AdSense have more than one blog. They actually have hundreds of simple blogs with a bunch of irrelevant content, with the hopes that no one will read. But instead click on the ad. By the way, you can not entice people to click on your ad. You can get penalized and have your account canceled.

No one knows the percentage or the exact amount that you receive every time some one clicks on an ad. All we know is the more money that advertisers pay Google for a certain keyword, the more money you will get from that ad. Essentially, you’re getting a piece of what advertisers are paying Google per click.

So quite naturally you would want that ads that advertisers pay top dollar for. Oppose to the ads where advertisers only pay .30 or .40 cents per click. You would want ads that pay $1 or more.

Some time in the near future, I am going to write another ezine article that explains the other two ways that you can make money blogging.

Blogging Advice For Beginners

Mel Menzies asked:

Social networking, web brands, and great online content are the buzz words of the internet. Yet it has been said that blogging (for web-log read “online journaling”) has added to the ‘misinformation and ignorance’ of the ‘digitally addicted’. Be that as it may, whether you’re blogging for profit or simply for fun, the aim of the game is always to attract more readers to your site.

I was asked to speak, last autumn, at a London-based meeting of the CMPA – a branch of the Music Publishers’ Association – on essential blogging know-how. Given that I’m relatively new to it myself, I was quite surprised at the volume of information I’d amassed. My aim is not to make money from the articles I write, nor from any associated advertising (I have none on my website). However, as an author, I do have a genuine desire to provide help and information for those in need of it – through the articles I write and the sale of my books; and to support a couple of charities with the proceeds of those sales.

The gist of my talk may be summed up in three words: Brand, Title, & Content.

WEB BRANDS

One of the earliest things I learned when I set up my website, was the need to establish your brand. Brand? I thought. Sounds like margarine, or vacuum cleaners. But I pretty soon picked up that what modern bloggers call blog branding is what you and I might once have termed ‘image’. You have to decide what it is that you’re trying to convey to your readers about you, your site, and whatever it is that you’re promoting. Branding blogs is all about creating a blog personality: an online presence.

For instance, Problogger, from whom I learned much of my technique, does ‘exactly what it says on the tin’. He’s a professional blogger, through and through. Makes his money by selling advertising space on his blog. What he doesn’t know about blogging isn’t worth knowing. But he’s so much more than simply professional. In the eight or nine months that I’ve ‘known’ him (through following his blog) he’s never failed to come across as a really nice guy; the sort of person you can trust; and someone who faithfully and generously shares his expertise with others. There are no strings attached. That’s his Unique Selling Point (USP).

There are other bloggers who scream hyperbole and insincerity. They may actually be very pleasant people, but they certainly aren’t conveying that impression. They promise the moon – subscribe, buy, sign up for – and reams later (or whatever the screen term is) you’re still being fed platitudes and empty promises. There is nothing, but nothing, at the end! Not unless you’re prepared to part with serious money.

MY BLOG PERSONALITY

Armed with this information, I decided, quite early on, what my brand was to be. First and foremost, of course, I’m an Author & Speaker. But there are an awful lot of us about. My USP was not something I’d considered at all before I started blogging. But as I began to compile the content for my new website, a new brand vision began to emerge. It began to dawn on me that the whole of my writing career – the published part of which stretches back to the beginning of the 1980′s – was driven by one desire: to bring hope to the hurting.

I felt quite nervous admitting to that on my Welcome page. It sounds rather pie-in-the-sky. A Do-gooder. The sort of person you’d avoid at all costs at the Christmas party because they’d probably bore the pants off you with unstoppable anecdotal evidence of their do-gooding. It’s what my first mother-in-law would have called verbal diarrhoea. But there was no getting away from the fact that every one of my books – autobiographical, biographical and self-help – were themed around social issues. Divorce, second marriage, stepfamilies, disability, drugs and AIDS – all were inspirational stories of how people had coped with these problems in life, and overcome. The message, loud and clear, was that if faced with a similar difficulty yourself, you, dear reader, could cope too. Little wonder, then, that my debut novel, was similarly motivated, dealing, as it does, with many of the elements of guilt, anger, blame, forgiveness, acceptance and peace that surround a sudden death in the family.

TANTALIZING TITLES

As an author, I know full well that a title is a juicy worm on a hook. Its purpose is to interest, attract and intrigue. If it fails in any one of its functions, it fails in them all. But we’re not talking books here. So what makes a blog title tantalizing?

Google Trends shows me what hot topics surfers are looking for. Google Adwords enlightens me on the actual keywords used. Between the two, I hope I’m able to ensure that my title will catch readers’ eyes and encourage them to visit my website. But ‘hits’ are not what I’m after. What I want are readers. So having hooked them, I can’t afford for my title to be an empty promise with nothing to back it up.

COMPELLING CONTENT FOR YOUR BLOG

One of the problems about blogging as an author is that you’re not writing to a tight focal point – as you would be, say, if you were creating content for your blog specifically on motor insurance, health issues, or photography. Covering a broad spectrum of topics is part of what being a writer is all about. In choosing content for blogs, you’re not exactly trying to be all things to all people (i.e. writing in the style of The Sun or The Guardian, Good Housekeeping or Hello. But you do have to tackle all sorts of subjects.

In doing so, you need to be providing your readers with information. This may be achieved in a number of ways: personal anecdotes / factually / entertainingly / informatively / by referring to other websites.

The danger, however, is that this splatter-gun style of blogging may become aimless. You fire-off your daily rounds of blogs in the hope of hitting something, but may end up missing your target audience completely. Even writing about writing doesn’t exactly fit the bill. It shows you know your stuff from an academic point of view and may attract would-be authors, but that doesn’t sell books. The only way to sell books is to have great online content. To blog in an engaging style. To have titles that attract and inspire. And above all, to ‘brand’ yourself with integrity.

In other words, simply to be YOU. Or, in the case of the CMPA, to be themselves. Whatever note they may strike!

How to Start a Blog to Make Money – A Guide to Blogging for Beginners

Valerie M. Edmon asked:

If you are looking to start a blog of your own in order to make money on the internet, you’ve made an excellent decision. Starting a blog is the best way to earn an income online and thankfully, it’s not difficult to get a blog up and running. Here are a few simple steps you can follow to get your blog started.

The first thing you need to do to start a blog is to choose your domain name. The domain is the name of your blog and it will be the web address of your site. This is a crucial step because the name of your blog will tell your visitors what your blog is all about. If you want to be really smart, try to choose a name that is search engine friendly.

That means that your visitors can find you in Google. To do this, try to imagine what your future blog readers would type into Google to find what they’re looking for. Then try to incorporate a couple of those words into your domain name.

Once you’ve chosen a name for your blog, you need to find a good blog host. The host is the company that will make your blog accessible online. Choosing the right host is important because if you’re going to make money through your blog, you can’t have the servers down and your blog not visible to your readers!

Finally, you need to actually set the blog up and get it running. To do this, you need to choose a blogging platform, install your blog, and link it up to your domain name and hosting company.

Blogging 101 – Blogging For Beginners

Rebecca Habel asked:

Blogging For Beginners is about teaching you the most basic vocabulary, which you’ll need to know to understand blogs.

The most important step in becoming proficient at anything is to learn the terminology. That applies to investing in stocks, to learning to blog.

Here are the most basic terms you’ll need to gain understanding in, if you are to become successful at blogging.

Blog is short for weblog. It’s just a series of posts presented online in reverse chronological order (newest date first). A blogger is someone who writes the post and blogging is the act of writing a post. Blogs can be text only, or they can contain photographs or pictures, sound or video. A video blog is one where the posts are presented in video format.

A post is simply a new entry into the blog

The rest of the terms you’ll need are to do with the technical parts of blogging.

You need a platform on which to store your blog. This is the software program that allows you to post blogs. You can find a free host or host your own. The most popular free hosts are Google’s Blogger and WordPress. WordPress can host a blog for you, or you can have your own website and domain and host it yourself.

Free or hosted, you can design a blog to suit yourself with templates which let you make it look the way you want. There are loads available on the net for free or for a fee. A template allows you to choose the colours, design, style of text and more.

Blogs can be public or kept private. If you’re interested in making money from your blog, you want it to be public and then you need to learn a whole heap more about what topic you want to write about, how to write successful posts, how to get your blog found by people and more.

Blogging For Beginners and Your Comments

October 17, 2010 by wpautoblog

Daniel Sumner asked:

Comments by readers of your blog can be moderated by you in a number of ways. Your decision on how you will monitor comments will have a large impact on your overall blog. It is important that you keep in mind the pros and cons of your decision.

First and foremost, blogs that invite comments from readers are generally more popular than blogs that do not. Web 2.0 is all about participation on the web and people like to feel part of a blog community rather than just a reader of a one-sided blog.

For some businesses it may make sense to disallow comments, however, for the majority of businesses and personal blogs you should consider allowing comments from your readers.

Unrestricted Commentary

One option you can have on your blog is unrestricted commentary. This allows anyone to post comments on your blog with no moderation. Though this is the most open form of blogging it is also the most dangerous. You will undoubtedly find inappropriate comments and SPAM on your blog which can lead to problems with the search engines.

For the most part it is not a good idea to allow unrestricted commentary.

Registered User Commentary

One small but effective way to restrict the commentary on your site is to require the person interested in commenting to register for your blog with a valid e-mail address. This will prevent most spammers who want to post quickly and move on. It will also help prevent people from posting ridiculous comments on your blog. Some SPAM and ridiculous commentary will still get through.

Once someone is registered you can monitor their postings on your blog and ban them or block them if you find them posting inappropriate comments.

Approved Comments Only

Most bloggers choose the option of allowing only approved comments to appear on their blog. Basically you set up the blog so you are notified anytime someone posts a comment to one of your postings. The comment will not appear until you have reviewed it and actively approved it.

Requiring comment approval is a good way to both allow comments and protect the integrity of your blog at the same time. Most people familiar with blogging expect to have their comments reviewed before being visible.

Allow commentary on your blog in order to keep your readers active on your blog but choose the level of protection that works the best for your needs.

5 Expert Blogging Tips For Beginners

October 16, 2010 by wpautoblog

Leigh A. Zaykoski asked:

If you’re just starting a blog (or two or three), it can be overwhelming. You need to choose a blogging platform, get your blog set up, make regular posts, check for comments from readers, make sure your links are working, and attend to a hundred other details. If you don’t know what to do and what to avoid, blogging can be difficult at best and completely frustrating at worst. Follow these tips for beginners to turn your blog into something you can be proud of.

Choose a platform you can learn easily.

Don’t choose a popular platform just because it’s popular. If you can’t figure out how to use it, your blog will be over before it starts. Shop around and find a blogging program that is easy to use and has options for technical support in case you get stuck.

Select a format that doesn’t require a lot of technical changes or adjustments.

Choose a blog template that does not need a lot of changes. If you find one you really like, you don’t even need to make any changes. Stay away from templates that need many changes or else you’ll find yourself with a blog that isn’t functioning after a few wrong keystrokes.

Back up your blog.

Backing up your blog should be something you do often. If something happens with the server or you accidentally delete your own blog (it’s been known to happen), you won’t spend days or weeks trying to start a new one or put the old one back together.

Write posts on topics relevant to your business.

If you’re the owner of a widget shop, you don’t need to write every single post about widgets themselves. However, you SHOULD write about topics related to the business of making widgets. You can write about bookkeeping for widget companies, how to use widgets, the types of challenges currently facing widget companies, and other related topics. Relevance is important for getting targeted search engine traffic to visit your blog.

Include links to other sites and affiliate products only if they’re relevant to the blog topic.

Relevancy is important for maintaining the credibility of your business. A bookkeeping blog with links to tax information and a book called “Bookkeeping for Beginners” for sale is good. A bookkeeping blog with links to gardening Web sites and a video on beekeeping for sale is not. Keep your blog relevant for your readers and they’ll be more likely to visit again.

Bonus Tip:

If you’re having difficulty with your blog, hire an expert blogging consultant. The expense of the assistance of a professional blogger will pay for itself many times over with the time and money you save on blog set up, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Blogging Basics For Beginners

October 15, 2010 by wpautoblog

P.S. Orr asked:

Blogging has become an internet medium that just about anybody can use to become fluent on the global international highway. Anyone can blog if they know just a few simple terms and how to get started with a basic blogging platform. If you’re interested in jumping in with all the blog chatter, here are a few things that you need to know in order to get started.

To understand blogs, you need to know blogging terms such as blog, platform, domain, and web host. Once you understand the basics about these elements, you can get started with your blog. You can also have confidence that you can converse with others about the art of blogging.

The term ‘blog’ is short for weblog, which simply means a series of online posts presented in reverse chronological order. That’s basically all! Generally, blogs are made up mostly of text, but more and more there are photo blogs and video blogs. You can add all sorts of things to blogs besides text such as pictures, videos, podcasts, and even adsense advertisements if you’re interested in making a little money from your specific posts.

The technical side of blogging requires that you know a little bit about the terms platform, web host, and domain. Simply put, a blogging platform is a computer software program that makes it possible for you to write posts and to update your blog anytime you want. Your platform is what is used to design the presentation style of your blog which includes such things as color scheme, font size and any other artsy design techniques you wish to add. The web host is basically the virtual file cabinet where your blog is stored. Your computer communicates with the designated host when you upload or edit a post.

Lastly, the domain name is the online address of your blog and it is usually best to end in ‘dot com.’ While these terms may sound a bit complicated, there are easy ways to get started blogging through free services that are already set up across the web. These services provide a platform, hosting service, and domain name of your choice (although if free, you will generally have to allow their service name to appear along with your domain name).

There is no better way to get started than to just jump in and get your feet wet through one of the free blogging services such as blogspot or wordpress. You will learn a host of other important pointers through their help systems and can become a seasoned blogger in no time.

Stephen Grisham Sr. asked:

There are a lot of reasons to blog, including voicing your opinions, doing a public service, and more. A more insidious motivation to start a blog is to make an impression on Google, by providing updated content to your site continuously (not to say there is anything wrong with romancing Google) This is because Google does not look favorably upon static websites and gives higher ranks to those which are updated more actively.

Locations to post/publish your Blog: There are multiple services available on the Internet for those who don’t already have a blog. WordPress.com and Blogger.com are two of the most popular ones. Yahoo.com as well, has begun to obtain a chunk of the blog pie. A traditional practice is to install your blog in a folder titled “blog” on your site, assuming you already have a website. It may look like: mydomain.tld/blog/

Blog Software: Try WordPress for blogging if you already have your website hosted. In addition, you can compose blog articles on Blogger and then post them up on a site that you own, via FTP.

Content: Original blog entries (your own words, not copied from others — an exception to this rule is when you use a brief excerpt from someone’s article), and current information with engaging content are all essential in making your blog effective.

Interaction with readers: Reader feedback can be allowed on your blog. This gives you the power to moderate your blog and comments. The “moderator” facility is necessary, since it’s difficult to fight off spammers. Also, individuals who disagree with you may leave rude comments.

Ensure you have visibility for your blog:

Keep fresh and original content Get
